Who is Mark?; Mark 1-3

We hear a little bit about the author of the gospel of Mark, in the book of Acts. We learn that his name was John Mark (ACTS 1 2 : 1 2 , 2 5 ). We also learn that Paul and Barnabus disagreed over what to do with him, so much so that they split up and went their separate ways to spread the gospel, Barnabus taking Mark along with him (ACTS 1 5 : 3 6 - 4 1 ) . Paul must have reconciled with Mark though, because by the time he writes 2 Timothy, he wants Mark to visit him because of his helpfulness in ministry (2 TIMOTHY 4:11). When we look at Mark’s gospel, I think a good theme verse for it is Mark 10:45 that says, “For even the Son of Man did not come to be
served, but to serve, and to give His life a ransom for many.” Mark focuses on Christ’s role of conquering sin and freeing people from its bondage. This gospel is short and sweet; it doesn’t dwell on extra details in the life of Christ, but maintains a sharp focus on Jesus’ ministry.

His distr...

Religious Traditions; Mark 6-8
Religious traditions are interesting to consider. On the one hand they can preserve truth and pass it on generation to generation. On the other hand, they can replace the truth they are trying to preserve! When they do this, they become futile. It is all too easy for us to see people devoted to o...

Rising From the Dead; Mark 9-10
The event of the transfiguration of Christ is still very captivating. I can’t imagine how amazing it would have been to have been there in person! The event itself brings up many questions. Peter, James, and John focused on asking about Elijah and his presence. Was this what the Scribes
were talk...
