A theme of Mark 5 is uncleanness. We have a man possessed by unclean spirits, who made him do unseemly things: He lived in tombs surrounded by human death; we’re told that he regularly cut himself and yelled out and that he was unusually strong, able to break out of shackles and chains. His distress could not be contained. When Jesus arrived, the man was drawn to Him and when questioned, the evil spirits controlling the man called themselves Legion, meaning thousands. A Roman Legion was a military unit of up to 6,000 soldiers. The demons begged Jesus not to make them leave the country but instead to allow them to enter a herd of pigs. As pigs were considered unclean animals by the Old Testament law, we see the theme of uncleanness continue.
