Why do you tithe or give offerings to the LORD? When God commands that His people Israel remember where they came from and why they give offerings, their history as slaves was being kept front and center of their cultural identity. You would be hard-pressed to find a country, city, or person today who would wave their disreputable past as a flag. This is humbling. They did not earn their freedom. They did not conquer anyone so they could boast. Their nation was not built by human ingenuity or might. It was because of their weakness that they were saved. God alone broke their chains and made them a nation set to conquer. Once they start
thinking it was all them, they will lose it all. And so will we. If satan can have our minds, he has our possessions, then our community, then our countries. Today we read about how God gave a prescription to the people of Israel in order for them to remember where they had come from and Who had brought them to the place they now lived. A command of God is not to be taken lightly. Although the offering was of freewill, God commanded how and why they should give it.
