"Things have gone sideways for ancient Israel. David, Israel’s up and coming king, was running for his life. In our reading today, we find David coming to Nob, the place where Ahimelech the priest was stationed. Not wanting to reveal the real circumstance for his arrival, David tells the priest that he has been sent on a mission by the king. In this way, King Saul would not be able to accuse
Ahimelech of helping David as a fugitive. It is interesting that David headed for Israel’s central place of worship, the Tabernacle. On the one hand, he was looking for weapons to arm himself with. On the other hand, he may have wanted to inquire of God: Why was he running for his life? David begins his emersion into some very dark but learning times. The first thing he would do is leave there and head for the Philistine territory to preserve his life. This seems to be the way David
thinks: Is God still there? Does He love me?

Doing Good; 2 Samuel 8-12
