"What does it look like to do the good and right thing? That depends on how you define good and right. In our culture, we too often think that what is good and right is determined by our feelings or desires, or by what is practical and pragmatic. When it came to the household of King Saul, David chose to do the right thing according to the Word of God. David had made a promise to
Saul’s family, and he was determined to keep it, mainly because of Jonathan, Saul’s son ( 1 SAMUEL 20:14-15). After the death of Saul and his sons, David inquired whether anyone was still alive from Saul’s family. He learned that Mephibosheth, Jonathan’s son, had escaped death when he was only five years old and was left lame in his feet ( 2 SAMUEL 4:4). It would have been totally normal for any descendant of the old king to have feared and expected death when summoned by the new king. Yet when Mephibosheth bowed before David, David told him not to be afraid and that he wanted to fulfill a promise made to Jonathan. What a huge relief that must have been.
