The time of Judah’s fall was awful! No one could trust anyone. The Babylonians were strong, vicious, and on the move; in this time of great tension, trust was a dangerous thing. There was upheaval in the world and Jeremiah was proclaiming the words of the LORD in the midst of it. God is present in all times, good and bad, and this was a very bad time. The king of Babylon tried to bring his peace to Jerusalem, if they became and stayed loyal to him, but he failed. At the end of it all, Jerusalem would be burned and completely destroyed. This horror was foretold by Jeremiah and declared necessary by God. Nebuchadnezzar’s anger led to the destruction of Jerusalem, and ultimately the revealing of Jerusalem’s false prophets. Jeremiah chapter 40 is the brutal story of how the king of the Ammonites chose to kill Gedaliah, who was the appointed governor of Jerusalem, by King Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon.
