The Song of Songs, also called the Song of Solomon, is an ancient romantic poem about the bridegroom, King Solomon, and his bride, the Shulamite woman. Marriage imagery is often symbolic of God’s relationship with His people. This has led some scholars to believe that Solomon’s poem is a prophetic word picture of Christ’s love and return for His bride, the Church (REVELATION 1 9 : 7 - 8 , 2 1 : 2 ) . For instance, the Shulamite bride warns the daughters of Jerusalem to remain chaste,
“Do not stir up nor awaken love until it pleases” (SONGS 2 : 7, 3 : 5 ) . This is spiritual advice cloaked in marital terms: Remain faithful and pure to God alone, do not seek after (or fornicate with) idols or false gods. The same exhortation of chastity and virginity is spoken of the Church, who is the new Jerusalem (MATTHEW 25:1; REVELATION 14:4, 21:2). Other scholars believe that Solomon wrote this poem about the one woman who captured his heart, and so it simply offers practical wisdom for understanding
love within marriage, like his other wisdom literature. There is good reason to believe that both views may be true. After all, the Holy Spirit is the One who inspired Solomon to write these things down.
