What does it mean to be lost? Some people equate being lost to feelings of despair or loneliness. But being lost is so much worse than feeling down and out––it is the absence of purpose. In Song of Songs 5, we hear the Beloved and the Shulamite speak to one another. Their hearts are full of feelings but they are speaking with much more than emotion. The Shulamite says, “…I sought him, but could not find him; I called him, but he gave no answer” (SONG OF SONGS 5 : 6 ). Purpose comes directly from God. When we are lost without Christ, a portion of our essence is missing––we are alone. But God designed man to never be alone (GENESIS 2:18). Loneliness goes against our very nature. That is why we may feel alone when we are lost, whether in the woods or in the big city. Our feelings are the symptom of God’s absence, both in our hearts and in the community of believers that surround us. But when we find Christ, or rather when Christ finds us, we are never alone, ever again. God indwells our bodies so that we may bond with members of His body, the Church. In so doing, we find our true purpose in life.
