"In Hebrew, the word covenant is berith, a promise and agreement made between two or more persons, which entails an alliance and commandment to follow. These agreements are often made with God as their witness and source of accountability. For example, Abraham wanted Isaac to marry a woman from his homeland, far away from Canaan. Abraham made a covenant with his oldest and most trusted servant in his household, who swore an oath before the LORD God, symbolized by placing his hand under Abraham’s thigh, the area associated with Abraham’s posterity. The servant was now accountable before God for keeping his promise. A berith can be made between God and man, such as the covenants with Noah, Abraham, and David. In the Noahic covenant, God’s commandment was not only for Noah and his sons but for all of humanity. It is still in effect, and still has serious consequences for breaking it. To break a covenant is not only to break alliance with man, but also with God. Praise God that the gift of repentance is a covenant forever under the authority of Jesus Christ our LORD!
