David compares God to thunder! In 2 Samuel 22 we get a sample of David’s music before we even reach what he is most famous for: the book of Psalms. This song in Samuel is a beautiful example of what David did best. He turned his experiences with God into lyrics, in this case, thanking God for His goodness. We know of David’s musical talent from early in his life because his music is said to have been able to soothe King Saul when a tormenting spirit would fall on him. Now, however, David is grown and has a lot of painful life experiences to colour his work. After everything he had been through, David writes this beautiful thanksgiving psalm for God’s deliverance. I love how David pictures God, “The LORD thundered from heaven, and the Most High uttered His voice. He sent out arrows and scattered them; Lightning bolts, and He vanquished them” ( 2 SAMUEL 22:14– 1 5 ). So often people describe our Lord as a young Babe in a manger, but the Bible also describes Him as a great, righteous warrior defeating evil.
