What a mess! David’s son Absalom created a conspiracy against his father the king, and the people supported him. It had been eleven years after Amnon’s terrible crime of assaulting Tamar. Absalom had killed Amnon for it, and now David had been persuaded to welcome Absalom back. There was no real reconciliation however, in that time Absalom’s resentment had grown into a full-blown plan to take the throne from his father. 2 Samuel 15 gives us the details of this rebellion. It is interesting to note that the Bible does not ever attempt to hide the sinful problems of its heroes. David has found himself trapped by circumstances that have come about because of his own failures and weaknesses. Absalom’s fate will be determined by his sins and complicated troubles that David seems to ignore. Let’s pay close attention to these very human details that God preserved for us in His Word.
