Many Jewish rabbis and teachers suggest that the second most important man in Jewish history is Ezra—Moses being the first. We do know that Ezra was a distant relative of Moses, since he was a descendant of Aaron, Moses’ brother. Ezra led the third wave of exiles returning to Jerusalem. The first returning exiles were led by Sheshbazzar, and the second wave of returning exiles were led by Zerubbabel. Zerubbabel had been responsible for beginning the construction of the Temple. Sometime after the completion of the Temple, Ezra returned to Jerusalem with a decree from King Artaxerxes in order to administer government affairs and supervise a return to proper godly worship. His entourage of returning exiles seems to have been the smallest of the three waves, but would prove extremely important for the proper worship of God.
