Humanity has accomplished amazing things throughout history, but we have never been able to rid ourselves of the sin that plagues our souls. Only Jesus Christ, fully God and fully man, has ever had the ability to confront and deal with our sin and rebellion. Back in the late fifth century BC, the man Nehemiah was heavily burdened by the thought of Jerusalem’s low
condition. It was a city with destroyed walls. That meant that it was not only unprotected, but shamed, brought low from its once respectable position. Nehemiah greatly desired to rebuild Jerusalem’s walls, taking away its shame and transforming it once again into a respected city. This was important to him because the Temple of the LORD was there. The thirteen chapters of Nehemiah’s book deal with the difficulties of rebuilding Jerusalem’s wall. Nehemiah had been the cupbearer of King Artaxerxes of Persia, his unique position gave him the favor he needed to push forward God’s cause.
