"King Solomon reigned in the golden age of Israel. The nation became wealthy and powerful under his leadership, but he became distracted and worshipped other gods. He was steered off course by his wives, because in ancient royal marriages the husband swears allegiance to the wife’s religion, and Solomon had a total of 700 wives and 300 concubines (1 KINGS 1 1 : 3 ). God had told the nation as well as the king of Israel that if they were not careful, then they would fall astray
and worship other gods. That is exactly what happened to Solomon. But remember that God had made clear to Israel and to Solomon the standards a king must uphold to assure the success of his reign. Deuteronomy 17:17 says: “Neither shall he multiply wives for himself, lest his heart turn away; nor shall he greatly multiply silver and gold for himself. Also it shall be, when he sits on the throne of his kingdom, that he shall write for himself a copy of this law in a book, from the
one before the priests, the Levites.” This was the downfall of Solomon.
