"The golden years were over. Taxes had become a heavy burden on the people, and Solomon led people into apostasy. He was swayed by the false gods of his many foreign wives and concubines. Now the kingdom falls to a man named Rehoboam, son of Solomon. And Rehoboam travels to Shechem to take his new position as king. But the people are tired and fed up with the failings of Solomon. So they confront the new king with an alternative. This was led by an enemy of Solomon who fled to Egypt while Solomon was king, his name was Jeroboam.
And he pulled together the people to follow his lead, challenging the leadership of Israel. Rehoboam was asked by the people to lighten their load. How would Rehoboam respond? He gathered advice from his father’s advisors and from his peers and then responded in a way that would split the kingdom.
