Sacred Spaces; Leviticus 23-25

In Greek, the title Leviticus means “pertaining to the Levites” and in Hebrew it means “and He
called.” The overall idea is that Leviticus contains God’s instructions to the tribe of Levi, as they
were to be the priests of God and caretakers of the Law, the Tabernacle, and eventually the
Temple. Leviticus then, is all about how the priests of God were to function and help the people
of Israel give their offerings to God. I find it fascinating how the Bible gives details about the
presentations of the various offerings. There are also sacred places and spaces that are talked
about. One such place is the showbread table that’s discussed in Leviticus 24. Here we learn
that the bread that was placed in the Tabernacle and later in the Temple stayed in place for
seven days. After this prescribed time, the bread was changed out for a fresh batch leaving the
priests to consume the old bread.
