Nehemiah discovered that his work to rebuild and restore Jerusalem was not just physical, it was spiritual. Nehemiah had to return to Jerusalem to correct the priests who were not following God’s Law. The Levites had allied themselves with people from Moab and Ammon who had not converted. Remember that Moab had been hostile to Israel since they had come out of Egypt, they were the nation who had even hired Balaam to curse Israel. The Ammonites were also involved in this skirmish because the Bible tells us in Deuteronomy 23:3-6 that no Ammonite or Moabite could enter the assembly of Israel or have a place in the Temple. Near the end of Nehemiah’s record, he writes of one more trip to Jerusalem to deal with problems the Levites had introduced into the Temple. It is wise for us to remember that God is the same
yesterday, today, and forever. God is holy, and He has called us to be holy.
