God has a way of enacting justice that also serves as a teaching tool for the rest of us. The way He worked out rescue for His people living in Persia stands as a great hope and a great warning. The evil plans of those in power were overcome by the actions of someone with no power. In an unexpected turn of events that involved displays of evil humanity, the orphaned Hebrew girl Hadassah became the new Queen of Persia. God had given her access to the King’s ear, and just in time. Her prayerful actions overthrew the plans of hateful Haman. His murderous desire to see all Jews destroyed was countered with a new decree from the King who loved his Hebrew Queen. On the day the enemies of the Jews had hoped to overcome them, it was the Jews who overcame. Everything that Haman boasted of was gone, even his ten sons. When we, as God’s people, are weak and vulnerable, God will be with us. Though the wicked may be powerful now, they will face judgment.

Full of Wind; Job 10-14
Zophar seems to me to be the harshest of Job’s three friends. He focuses only on the issue of sin. He tells Job that he is a man full of wind with his complaints. Zophar says, “Should your empty talk make men hold their peace?” ( J O B 1 1 : 3 ). What a comfort for your friend who has just lost e...

Times of Pain; Job 15-20
Sometimes there are just no words. It is very easy to lose our perspective during times of great pain. It can be hard or impossible to think well in those states. Praying the Psalms can be a good strategy that can give words to our hearts, and when all else fails, the Scriptures reminds us that t...
