The book of Job brings us up close and personal with human suffering. It is an uncomfortable book. It focuses in on a specific kind of suffering: Undeserved suffering. In the case of Job, he was a righteous man, following the Law of God, and therefore blameless, forgiven of his sins. And yet, God gives permission for him to lose everything that he holds dear, and everything that made his life comfortable. In an unusual scene, we hear a discussion between God and Satan. Satan claims that Job only loves God because he is comfortable and safe. Satan claims that if God were to remove His protection from Job, then Job’s true, evil nature would come out, and he would stop following God. Job is not made aware of this challenge over his faith, he is only aware that one day his life is good and well, and the next he has lost everything. Job’s wife did not die, but in her grief, she is overcome and says, “Do you still hold fast to your integrity? Curse God and die!” (JOB 2:9). In great grief and confusion we see Job begin his lament.

Zophar says, “Should your empty talk make men hold their peace?” ( J O B 1 1 : 3 ). What a comfort for your friend who has just lost e...

Times of Pain; Job 15-20
Sometimes there are just no words. It is very easy to lose our perspective during times of great pain. It can be hard or impossible to think well in those states. Praying the Psalms can be a good strategy that can give words to our hearts, and when all else fails, the Scriptures reminds us that t...

God Sees; Job 21-25
God sees you. He sees you in times of happiness, strength, and peace. He sees you in times of pain, sorrow, and loss. In times of grief, it helps me to remember that God doesn’t just know my sorrow, He understands it. Through Jesus Christ, who was fully God and fully man, He has experienced human...
