A lot was happening during the days of Ezra, descendant of Aaron, whose ministry also overlapped with that of Nehemiah’s. Ezra is believed to be the author of the Biblical book named after him, and he began his ministry around 538 BC. He was a scribe, skilled in the Law of God. Ezra loved the LORD his God and recorded some amazing history for us. King Cyrus
of the Medes and Persians had issued a command that allowed the Jews to return to Jerusalem and rebuild the Temple. Ezra was involved in a later part of this return; he stirred up the returned exiles to build the foundations of the Temple. Jerusalem needed to be rebuilt, in fact, there were many details of ancient life that had to be rebuilt. To keep the people on track, God also rose up two prophets: Haggai, who challenged the people to work on God’s Temple, and Zechariah, who had unique and powerful visions from God about their future.
