When God began to deal with Jacob, Jacob moved to cleanse his household of evil. Even though they did not have the law of God yet (this would come with Moses later), they knew that worshipping idols and other gods was a violation against the one true God. In Genesis 35, we witness the change in Jacob’s attitude. He was deeply affected by the encounters he had with God, his physical fight with God back in Genesis 32 had even left him with a limp. Now Jacob was beginning to pay attention to the LORD, and modifying his behavior to meet Him. The name “Israel” was given to Jacob by God Himself, and now the LORD reiterates it again. Jacob
needed to pay attention. Israel means “God contends” or “one who struggles with God.” God was beginning the construction of His specific nation. Today that name remains with us. Israel is still a nation! It survives as a witness to God’s plan.
