Once again, our reading covers a lot of history. Genesis 36 begins by listing out the genealogy of Esau, who becomes the nation of Edom. Chapter 37 tells us about Joseph’s dreams and what happens when his brothers become jealous and hateful of him. Chapter 38 introduces us to the unique and disturbing journey of Judah and his sons. Then Genesis 39 picks the story of Joseph back up, taking us with him as he goes from slave to prisoner to captain of the guard. Joseph’s life is very interesting, but before we jump into it, let’s go back and review the foundations of the nation of Edom. The Bible spends a bit of time on them, and it’s important
to see how the Bible explains the how’s and why’s behind people’s trajectories.
