The Coin Collector; Matthew 1-4

The gospel of Matthew is interesting for a few reasons. Though it comes first in the order of books placed in the New Testament, it does not seem to have been written first, that honour goes to the gospel of Mark. It is an interesting thought then, that Matthew would have been aware of the gospel of Mark while he was writing his own. Scholars have long thought that Matthew was written to a Jewish audience due to its language and content. Matthew, Mark, and Luke are grouped together into what are called the synoptic gospels, meaning that they largely cover the same material from Jesus’ ministry from their different perspectives. I like to think of Matthew as an ancient coin collector, not only because he was a tax collector before becoming Jesus’ disciple, but also because he makes a few references to coins. He talks about the two-drachma tax (MATT.17:24), the four-drachma coin (MATT.1 7 : 2 7 ), and the talents (MATT.18:24). Let’s dive into his account today.

Lord of the Sabbath; Matthew 11-14
The Sabbath was a major point of contention between Jesus and the religious leaders of His day. The Sabbath day is the day of rest at the end of the week that was instituted by God in Genesis 2. Genesis 2:1-3 says that God rested on the seventh day and called it blessed. This is interesting becau...

Blind Leading the Blind; Matthew 15-17
The picture that Jesus paints of the scribes and Pharisees is very vivid: The blind leading the blind. This would have been extremely offensive to these men who had given their lives to studying and teaching the Scriptures and rabbinic traditions. They knew the words, but they did not know God or...
