The picture that Jesus paints of the scribes and Pharisees is very vivid: The blind leading the blind. This would have been extremely offensive to these men who had given their lives to studying and teaching the Scriptures and rabbinic traditions. They knew the words, but they did not know God or His heart. By the time Jesus came on the scene, there were many teachings on how to follow the Law, but it seems like it was at the expense of understanding the Law! Thank God for the work of Christ. He has opened up salvation for us and ushered in a new time of being able to understand what the Bible says and means. It all begins with His life and teachings that challenge our tendencies to make everything a system without a heart.
