He Is Coming; Malachi 1-4
Season 9, Episode 8

10-Sep-2025
At the close of the Old Testament, we have the book of the prophet Malachi. The name Malachi means “My messenger” and is very fitting for a prophet whose job was to act as a messenger of God. Because of that, some have suggested that his name is a title, a name taken on because of his role. Some people even think that it was a pen name for the prophet Ezra, but it is a more common and, I think, realistic belief that Malachi was not Ezra in disguise but a different prophet who was convicted in the same way as Ezra and Nehemiah. In his very first chapter, Malachi times his prophecies by mentioning the destruction of Edom which is believed to have happened
in the late sixth century BC. This would make him contemporary with the prophets Haggai and Zechariah. He then goes on to bring stern warnings for corrupt priests. His small book aligns with the fundamental message of the Old Testament, showing us the nature of God. He calls God’s
people back to a right understanding of God and admonishes them to honour God with sincere worship, genuine faith, and healthy humility.

It is an interesting thought then, that Matthew would have been aware of the gospel...
