I remember first hearing the story of Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego in Sunday school, when I was a boy. Their Hebrew names were Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah. These young men were taken captive along with their friend Daniel, in the third year of Jehoiakim (2 CHRONICLES 36:5-7).
They were taken to Babylon by Nebuchadnezzar and had been chosen to serve before him. They knew the law of God and were committed to live for Him, no matter where they found themselves. So, when Nebuchadnezzar made a statue of gold and ordered all people in His kingdom to bow before it, these young men defied the king’s command. Nebuchadnezzar’s command was a direct violation of God’s law: “You shall not make for yourself a carved image—any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth; you
shall not bow down to them nor serve them” (EX . 20:4-5, DEUT. 5 : 8 - 9 ). The cost of their defiance was death in the fiery furnace. How would God respond?
