The prophecies of Daniel are so grand and interesting that it is easy to overlook the posture of Daniel’s heart. To me, we have a lot to learn from this man’s attitude. Instead of assuming his own importance, Daniel came to God in repentance: Repentance for himself, for his fathers, for his nation. Daniel forced himself to be honest about the humiliating situation that Israel was in, even though he himself lived a physically comfortable and privileged life as a part of the king’s court. Daniel remembered that his nation was still in exile, he was still in exile, and he longed for the days when they could live out God’s plan for them again. Daniel could have taken a very different posture, complaining about Israel’s plight and the difficulties he faced trying to balance his pagan duties with his faith. Instead, Daniel remembered who God was. In light of God, our only
proper response is humility and repentance. When we come to God in honesty with our hurts and disappointments, He will bring us His mercy and forgiveness.
