Psalm 140 is a clear cry for help in the midst of battle. It makes me think of music’s historic association with battle. Instruments were used to give important signals and instructions, music was played to synchronize movement, and played in the downtimes to revive the hearts of weary
men. It was not until recently, with the invention of new communication technology, that music lost a lot of its place on battlegrounds. Psalm 140 is a song reaching for God’s help from the enemy, from evil and violent men who oppose God and perpetrate evil things. God is called in prayer to come and rescue. We read the lyrics of the Psalms today, but they were originally written to be sung. We know from even our own cultural experience, that if you want to pass on words to the next generation and even to commit them faithfully to your own memory, a song is a great way to do it.
