"King David's time on earth was coming to an end, yet he had failed to publicly declare the next king. Absalom’s younger brother Adonijah, son of David and Haggith, was next in line to the throne and declared himself king without David’s permission. But God said He would establish his kingdom through David’s son Solomon, his second son with Bathsheba. However, Adonijah was ambitious and made all the attempts to seize his father’s throne before he died. David
was on his deathbed and was not in any position to fight back and establish the next kingdom, so Adonijah took advantage of the situation. In today’s reading, we see how Adonijah was claiming his ‘rightful’ place as king. In fact, even Joab, David’s long time military commander, sided with Adonijah. Would all the people who were once established in David’s kingdom now side with Adonijah or would King David’s plan for Solomon be established? Something for us to remember is that it was God who told David that his son Solomon would build His Temple.
