I heard a story told years ago about a man who was marooned on a desert island for ten years. He was surrounded by nothing but salt water. Then one day, a ship was passing by and saw his call for help. They sent a smaller boat to the island and found him. The man was so grateful! Looking around, the men who came to save him saw two small shacks not far from the shack he used as his home. The rescuers asked what the buildings were. Pointing first to one of the shacks and then to the other, he explained, “This shack is the church that I founded and went to alone. This other shack is the church I went to after the first church went bad.” Now this is
supposed to be a joke, but the point is powerful: It doesn’t matter if a church has thousands of members or just one, we will always find a fault. The Church has its fair share of troubles! There is no doubt about that. But why? Because it is for people who are troubled, it is for all the people in the world ensnared by sin. In our reading today, Paul teaches the Galatian churches how to handle each other when anyone has become caught up in sin.
