"Amos was a sheep breeder from Tekoa, a village about 10 miles south of Jerusalem. Though he was a farmer, God called him as a prophet. And though he was from Judah, his ministry was to Israel. Amos spoke against the insincere religious institutions of his day. The problem was that the people were experiencing a time of economic success, so they
believed they were being blessed by God, all the while living against Him. The nation had forgotten who God was and what He had done for them. Amos was tasked with calling them to repentance. His name is very fitting, it means ""burden bearer."" Chapter one is directed to five places that had angered God by their foolish behaviour. We get to see God not only confronting His own people, Israel, but also people outside of His covenant. In the prophets of the Bible, God truly speaks to all humanity about our injustice. Remember: God sees everything, everywhere.
