"With the giving of the law, God gave Israel the opportunity to change their culture forever. Lasting change is difficult, as we all know, and yet God called on Israel to reestablish themselves according to His plan. The reason for the change was simple, God had rescued Israel. As the one true God, He required faithfulness from Israel, they were not to worship
other gods. That first generation of Israelites seems to have believed in multiple gods that would have been over different elements of life, but this God of Israel was over all things, more powerful than anything or anyone else. Remember that the Jewish Shema instructs the Israelites: “Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God, the LORD is one! You shall love the LORD
your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your strength"" (DEUTERONOMY 6:4-9). This is a significant change from the culture of Egypt the Israelites had grown up with. The God that was faithful to them now required faithfulness in return.
