Back in Genesis 49, Jacob, renamed Israel, blessed his sons who would become the twelve tribal heads of the nation of Israel. To Judah he said, “The scepter shall not depart from Judah, nor a lawgiver from between his feet, until Shiloh comes;” (GENESIS 49:10). This promise was ultimately accomplished by Jesus Christ, but in our reading today we see the physical property of the tribe of Judah being highlighted. Joshua 15 gives us the boundaries of Judah’s land, and we learn that the LORD was very serious about where they were in the nation. Israel was also
very serious about tribal territory and family lineage. Remember that King David, and all the subsequent kings of Jerusalem were from the tribe of Judah, and Jesus Christ was born in that heritage too. Many times in the New Testament, Jesus is referred to as the son of David. As we continue reading in Joshua we’ll see that every one of the Israelite tribes’ territories are given, and through this we can reconstruct their ancient map.
