Our reading today in Joshua 19 covers the land of the tribes of Simeon and Zebulun. Simeon is interesting to me because of the prophecies of Genesis 49. Remember that is when Jacob, or Israel, gave prophesies to his sons about the future of their descendants. And here in our reading, that future is continuing to unfold. In Genesis 49:5-6, Jacob prophesied, “Simeon and Levi are brothers; Instruments of cruelty are in their dwelling place. Let not my soul enter their council; Let not my honor be united to their assembly; For in their anger, they slew a man.” This prophecy remembered the brutal actions of Simeon and Levi back in Genesis 34. To Zebulun, Jacob said, “Zebulun shall dwell by the haven of the sea; He shall become a haven for ships, and his border shall adjoin Sidon” (GENESIS 49:13).
