"The words recorded in 2 Chronicles 25 sound all too familiar: There are people who serve God, but not with their whole hearts. One of these men was the 9th king of Judah, Amaziah. He was a relatively good king, the Bible says that he served the LORD but not with a completely loyal heart. Amaziah had about 300,000 men who could fight, but he felt he needed more. He hired another 100,000 men from Israel, Judah’s sister nation to the north. God confronted Amaziah about this through a prophet. These men were not necessary and would actually harm Judah because Israel was in rebellion to God. God would not support those men in battle. Amaziah’s problem was that he had already paid them, and they would have been expecting spoils from battle too. Amaziah obeyed God, but the mercenaries were deeply offended.

Hearing God; Nehemiah 8-10
