"Although the rebuilding of the Temple had been taking place, work had stopped between the years 535-520 BC. This state of affairs was corrected by God. He called two prophets to speak to the returned Israelites: It was time to resume the building. Haggai and Zechariah prophesied faithfully to the people. They knew that the Jewish nation’s success could not be secured until the Temple was built. The Mosaic Law involved the Temple so intensely that the only way the people could fulfill the law would be to obey God’s early command to rebuild the Temple. Once rebuilding had resumed the Israelites had to face more opposition. Efforts to stop their work made it all the way to the king of Persia. Today’s reading is a record of those efforts. While it is a different time and nation today, it is interesting to think about how Jews are still striving to rebuild the Temple, and face seemingly impossible obstacles.
