The Image of God; 2 Samuel 4-7

2 Samuel 6 records the movement of the Ark of the Covenant to Jerusalem. It had been kept at the city of Kiriath Jearim for many years. Before this, the Israelites had misused the ark; they took it into battle with them and it was lost to the Philistines for a time. Now that it had been back in Israelite hands for a while, David decided that he would move the ark to be closer to him in the new capital city. Though David was a man of God, even he was not paying attention to God’s law. God had given instructions through Moses on how to handle and transport the ark. The people tried to honour God in their own way by using a new cart to transport and by leading the way with a great celebration. But when we ignore the ways of God, our good intentions don’t matter. The law of God was to be followed by His covenant people. David’s failed attempt to bring the ark to Jerusalem was because he did not consider how God desired the ark to be moved.
