"With one read of the book of Amos, it is easy to see why Amos is referred to as God’s angry man. The Bible tells us that he was a sheepherder and farmer by trade. He appears on the scene during the time of King Uzziah of Judah, and King Jeroboam of Israel. This was a prosperous and successful period clashing with Amos’ name which means “the burden”. The way the Hebrew language is used indicates that this name should be taken as one who lifts the burden or holds the burden. Amos speaks in a short, to-the-point style and tells his listeners what they need to hear without many linguistic flourishes. In Amos 2, the unexpected prophet speaks directly to the Moabites, the Judeans, and the Israelites. He is very direct. Through this interesting book, we learn that times of prosperity can be deceiving. Prosperity does not mean that all is right with God.
