In today’s reading, the law set out ways for Israel to remember God once they had entered the Promised Land. People quickly get used to their surroundings, and we are always in danger of forgetting where we came from. Israel was commanded to give the first of the produce of their land as an offering to God. This would remind them that God brought them there; He rescued them, kept them safe, and gave them a good home. They would remember Him and honour Him with the first of their produce. That is the essence of giving offerings to God. Offerings are to be wholehearted, grateful gifts to God remembering all that He has done for us. Sadly, I think this idea has gotten lost in some churches today. We do not give to get, we do not give because it’s a rule, we
give because we love God and He has given us so much! As Christians, we want to live in gratitude and further the mission of growing God’s Kingdom. Church isn’t just about getting something it’s also about giving our attention, time, and resources to God. Today, let’s remember why we give.
