Although Balaam could not curse the people of Israel, he introduced a temptation that would get Israel to curse themselves. The men of Israel were tempted by the women of Moab and began engaging in sexual relationships with them. These relationships involved the men offering sacrifices to the Moabite false gods and eating idolatrous meals. This was a major sin in Israel, but many did not care. The problem grew quickly, and 24,000 men ended up dying because of their sexual sin. Rebellion comes in many forms, but this type of rebellion is incredibly selfish. God intended us to have sexual pleasure inside of a marriage covenant between a man and a woman.
Anything outside of that is sinful. We don’t like to face it, but sexual sin sets a destructive pattern in our lives that can kill us. After this awful incident, we land in Numbers 26 and at a new start given from the LORD. Moses is commanded to take a census of the men of Israel.
