One of the great challenges for a nation made up of twelve tribes was navigating shifting lands. In other words, when daughters would marry men from other tribes, the land would become part of the tribe she married into if the daughters were given the ownership of the land. This was the case with a man named Zelophehad, who had no sons but only daughters. After he passed away, Zelophehad’s daughters petitioned for and were granted equal property rights. This meant that when women who inherited land would marry men from another tribe, the land rights would follow them into that tribe, shifting the land to new ownership. It was established by God, through
Moses, that Zelophehad’s daughters could marry anyone they wanted to as long as it was within their own ancestral tribe. This way it guaranteed the stability and continuity of the tribal land allotments.
