The tenth king of Judah was named Joash, and he did not come to the throne easily. He reigned from 835–796 BC. At the death of his father the king, Joash’s grandmother, the Queen Mother Athaliah, went on a murderous rampage. Joash was rescued by his Aunt Jehosheba, the wife of Jehoiada the priest. They kept Joash secretly in the Temple for six years, while Athaliah reigned in her son’s place. Athaliah was the daughter of King Ahab and Queen Jezebel from northern Israel. She had married into the palace of Jerusalem. In King Jehoshaphat’s desire to ally Judah and Israel, he had arranged the marriage between his son and Athaliah. It had ended more disastrously than anyone could have predicted. After six years the priests were ready to launch a take back of the throne, they declared the boy Joash king of Judah. Athaliah was furious but overtaken and executed. Now, Joash could begin the work of restoring the House of David in Judah.
