God is so gracious. When reading Jonah, we see this in two ways. First, in sending a prophet to warn Nineveh at all. They were a people who didn’t seek or care about God, they revelled in their evil, but God knew that if they were told of their pending judgment that things would change. A second way God shows us His graciousness is in calling Jonah to the task. Jonah was not reflecting the attitude of God. He may have spoken the words God had given him, but he was ticked off about it! He wanted God to destroy the people of Nineveh. Jonah knew
God’s grace and forgiving nature, which is why he didn’t want to go to Nineveh in the first place. We end the book of Jonah not knowing the actual outcome of the experience for Jonah. But if anyone ever needed to be confronted with God’s heart, it was Jonah. God even caused a teachable moment for the prophet with the sprouting and then dying of the shade plant. God is gracious to teach us, even when we don’t deserve it. God is different than us humans. He is perfect, He is good. Let’s try to reflect Him.
