We know quite a bit about the prophet Micah. His name means “Who is like Yahweh” and he prophesied during the reigns of three kings of Judah: Jotham, Ahaz, and Hezekiah. This places Micah in the last half of the eighth century BC and into the beginning of the seventh, and alive at the same time as the prophet Isaiah. We also know that Micah was from the village of Moresheth, which was 20 miles southwest of Jerusalem on the border with Philistia. His book can be divided into thirds; one third proclaims God’s judgment on Micah’s countrymen,
another third focuses on what God will send in His coming judgment, and the final third gives hope for God’s promised restoration. We see Micah delivering messages to the rebellious and sinful false prophets who had led the people into sin, and to the rich who were oppressing the poor. To those who were truly seeking God, Micah’s message was hopeful, God would hear their prayers (MICAH 7:7).
