Zophar seems to me to be the harshest of Job’s three friends. He focuses only on the issue of sin. He tells Job that he is a man full of wind with his complaints. Zophar says, “Should your empty talk make men hold their peace?” ( J O B 1 1 : 3 ). What a comfort for your friend who has just lost everything! Zophar shows us who we are when we think we know everything; when we are answering a question rather than a person’s heart cry. As the readers of the book, we know that Job hasn’t done anything wrong to cause his calamity. God was testing him. But this was also a test for Zophar: How would he handle the challenge of a man just like him losing it all?
Zophar was unknowingly in the wrong and heaping more suffering on his friend. It is important for us to really listen to people. Theological arguments are not as important as the people who sometimes pose them.
We are a family-run international ministry with television, print and online programs designed to guide you through the Bible in one year.
