After Saul’s death the kingship of David grew, but not all of Israel followed him. Saul’s military commander, Abner, declared Saul’s son Ishbosheth king of Israel, and many followed Ishbosheth and Abner. After many years of fighting, Ishbosheth and Abner had slowly lost ground. Tensions must have been high, because after a falling out Abner decided to ditch Ishbosheth and convince the elders of Israel to follow David. There seems to have been special negotiations with Saul’s tribe, Benjamin. They were losing the kingship, however, David required from them the return of his first wife and daughter of Saul, Michal. This meant there would still be a Benjamite in the house of David. This was a shrewd move on David’s part. It seems to have allowed a good relationship with Benjamin, while legitimizing his rule in the eyes of those faithful to Saul’s house.
