Though Rebekah was an amazing woman and Isaac was a one-woman man, they still had difficulties. We see this play out in the later part of their marriage when it came to passing on the father’s blessing. In those ancient days, the father was expected to give a special blessing of his family to the firstborn son. However, in their children’s case it was a bit more complicated, not only because the brothers were twins and had discussed inheritance on their own, but also because the parents favored different sons; Esau was referred to as Isaac’s son and Jacob was referred to as Rebekah’s son. To complicate it further, Rebekah had earlier received a prophecy from God that their older son would serve their younger son (GENESIS 25). Technically, Esau was
the firstborn, and he would have been expecting the blessing. However, with Rebekah’s blessing and encouragement Jacob tricked Isaac into giving the firstborn blessing to him.
