Pride is never a good thing, especially when you become a Christian. We learn from the Bible that pride is an enemy of God. When we are proud people, God’s Word tells us that we are ready for a devastating fall. Proverbs 16:18-19 says: “Pride goes before destruction, and a haughty spirit before a fall. Better to be of a humble spirit with the lowly, than to
divide the spoil with the proud.” In Ezekiel chapter 16, the Holy Spirit speaks of the fall of Jerusalem. The city was full of pride, probably because of all the religious significance that had been placed there. Yet, even so, God will, and did, set the record straight. When we disobey God, it is primarily because of pride. We are all born under sin. We’re born with destructive, prideful tendencies, but we must push against these. We must keep ourselves holy by coming to the LORD, confessing and turning away from sin. We know God is faithful to forgive us, but we must never take advantage of His mercy.
