The Bible’s overall theme is the rescue of humanity. It is not focused on a nation or a people but on God’s plan. He works with us as we come to Him, His ways, and His reality. In this life, everyone must face the reality of a decision for or against Jesus Christ. In today’s passage we read again about one of the two cities mentioned most in the Bible: Jerusalem and Babylon. These two cities are opposites in their origin and destination. Babylon is known as the city of sin, while Jerusalem is the city of God. In Isaiah’s context, Babylon will be used to bring judgment on Judah and Jerusalem for abandoning their covenant with God. But Babylon itself will not avoid punishment for its excessive sin. We understand that, when we speak of Babylon, there is a destruction that cannot be stopped or avoided.
