When King Saul died on Mount Gilboa, things had changed dramatically for David. He prayed and asked God what his next move should be. After the recent events of his life: rejection by Saul, rejection by the Philistines, the near loss of everything at Ziklag, David had learned that nothing happens without God’s approval. At the opening of the book of 2 Samuel, we see a fascinating display of God’s provision for this rejected David: he became king of the tribe of Judah. Keep in mind that this is years after he was anointed by Samuel to be the future king of all Israel. I’m sure this wasn’t the way David expected his life to unfold, and the reader gets to learn alongside him that God’s plans include everyone, not just our needs. In 2 Samuel 2, David asks the LORD when and where he should move. The answer is Hebron, where he ruled over his tribe for seven years and six months before he would finally be made full king of Israel.
